Product Description [+] [-]
In April 1884, Van Gogh mentions his first three pen and ink drawings made of the garden of the Nuenen vicarage. The sheets depict the garden of his father's house in spring of that year - most likely in March - before the trees began to bud. He made another three drawings during the course of April. The late winter landscape and the lonesome church are symbols of Van Gogh's inner isolation. The primary motif of the drawing comprises the bare trees standing in the foreground, enormous and with gnarled trunks. The block of the old tower of Nuenen stands at the horizon, running below the central axis of the image. |
